South Padre Island is as far south as Texas goes, and it fishes like it. Snook and tarpon at the jetties, redfish on the Lower Laguna Madre flats, and blue water with marlin, sailfish and wahoo past the drop. Snook are the signature South Texas fish, and this is their turf.
The Run
Boats head out through Brazos Santiago Pass from Port Isabel and South Padre, or out of Port Mansfield to the north.
The first stop is the RGV Reef, about 13 miles northeast of the jetties. At roughly 1,650 acres, Lone Star Outdoor News calls it the largest artificial reef off the Texas coast. Rigs sit just beyond it, and together they put red snapper, amberjack and grouper within easy range.
The real show starts at the drop-off around 50 miles out. That is where mahi, wahoo, tuna and billfish get thick. Wahoo also hunt the rips, ledges and drops from about 30 miles out.
For tuna, the long play is the deepwater oil rigs, some as far as 100 miles off the coast.
What Bites, When
There is no true off-season in SPI. Here is how it shakes out.
Blue marlin and sailfish own the summer. Blue marlin run strongest May through September; sailfish peak June through August.
Mahi build through spring as the water warms and peak into summer.
Wahoo break the pattern. They are a winter target here, peaking November through January, and the SPI Wahoo Classic lands in September.
Inside, snook crowd the jetties and beachfront in summer and hold in the bay until October. Redfish are thick on the Lower Laguna Madre flats through the warm months and catchable year-round.
How to Fish It
Offshore, it is a speed game. Get to the drop and make high-speed passes for wahoo using a high-speed wahoo trolling spread. Summer, slow down and pull a billfish spread for blue marlin and sailfish, and work every weed line for mahi.
The inshore game is the reason a lot of anglers come. Work the jetties and surf for snook using the snook structure and surf guide. On calm mornings, the flats are built for sight-casting redfish.
Pack for This Port
Splitting time between the blue water and the jetties means two kits. Offshore: a lever-drag reel, heavy braid, and wire that wahoo cannot cut. Inshore: fluorocarbon leader, polarized glasses and a spinning setup that handles a snook diving for the rocks.
Grab the wahoo wire-ready kit for the drop and the inshore redfish ambush kit for the flats. Dial in leaders with the wire leader roundup and the best saltwater braid.
Before You Go
Texas sets its own saltwater regulations, including snook and redfish rules, and federal Gulf reef fish seasons change year to year. Check TPWD and NOAA first. Tunas, billfish, swordfish and sharks fall under federal Atlantic HMS rules, so read the HMS Angling permit requirements. A 50-to-100-mile run demands a solid forecast, a float plan and fuel to spare. Not legal advice. Use the agency links here.
