High-Speed Wahoo Trolling Spreads

Wahoo don’t give you a second look. You either put the right lure in front of them at the right speed, or you don’t get the bite.

High-speed trolling is built around one number: how fast can you run without your spread falling apart. Most boats troll bait spreads at 6-9 knots. Wahoo spreads run 12-18, fast enough that the average ballyhoo spread shreds in minutes. This is a different game with different gear.

The Spread

Run 4-6 lines at staggered distances: short riggers at 15-25 feet, long riggers at 40-60 feet, shotgun way back at 80-100+. Cover the boat’s entire wake width and length so a wahoo tracking the spread from any angle sees something.

Lure selection matters more than at trolling speed for tuna or mahi. Bullet-nosed or cone-head lures skirted in dark colors (black/purple, black/red) hold their action at speed without blowing out or spinning. Skip the feather jigs and naked baits that work at 7 knots; they can’t survive 15.

The Rig

Power Pro braid main line to a wind-on leader of fluorocarbon, then a mandatory 6-12 inch section of single-strand wire leader ahead of the hook. This isn’t optional. A wahoo’s teeth go through 200lb fluoro on the strike like it’s nothing. Wire leader is the one non-negotiable component of a wahoo-specific rig.

Reading the Bite

Wahoo hit at speed. The strike is often violent enough to nearly pull a rod out of the holder. Set drag firm from the start; there’s no gentle build-up like a tuna bite. When one line goes off, clear the rest of the spread fast. Wahoo frequently travel in pairs or small packs, and a second hookup in the first thirty seconds is common enough to be worth the scramble.

What Kills This Rig

Running too slow. Under 12 knots, most wahoo-specific lures lose their darting action and just swim flat, and you’ll raise fewer strikes than a proper bait spread would at the same speed.

Skipping the wire. One bite-off costs you the lure, the fish, and the time to re-rig while the school moves on.

Overcrowded spreads at speed. More lines at high speed means more tangles when a fish crosses the spread. Four clean lines beat six tangled ones.

Run it to the horizon: high-speed wahoo trolling covers water fast, which is exactly the point when you’re hunting a fish that doesn’t sit still.
