The Big Rock is not a rock. It is a stretch of ledges and cliffs where the Gulf Stream crashes into the edge of the continental shelf, and it gave its name to a multi-million-dollar blue marlin tournament. Morehead City sits at the front door. The run is short. The fish are not.
The Run
Morehead City boats run Beaufort Inlet, and the Gulf Stream sits about 30 miles off it. That is one of the shortest runs to blue water on the Atlantic coast, which means more trolling time and less fuel burned getting there.
The Big Rock sits about 40 miles south of Beaufort Inlet. It is a relatively small piece of ocean, about 10 miles long and a mile wide, built from ledges, peaks and crevasses. Rock bottom holds snapper, grouper and baitfish. Bait pulls in pelagics. Pelagics pull in the boats.
What Bites, When
April and May open the season. Wahoo are often the early target, and the first mahi start showing under sargassum. Yellowfin stay active through spring.
June through August is the heart of it. Blue marlin are most reliably encountered in these months, mahi and yellowfin are thick, and the Big Rock tournament fills the harbor in June. Marlin stay a target into September.
September through November brings cooling water and wahoo runs, with yellowfin active well into fall and mahi hanging on into October.
Winter is not dead water. February is regarded as prime time for wahoo along the Carolina coast, for crews willing to brave the run and the fuel bill.
The NC Division of Marine Fisheries wahoo profile says wahoo run north through the Gulf Stream in summer, so early summer carries shoulder weight for wahoo. The peak months above come from the local fishing sources listed below.
How to Fish It
Summer at the Rock is a trolling game for blue marlin. Run a full spread with teasers and work the ledges and temperature breaks. Our blue marlin trolling spread guide lays out positions, speeds, and the hookup sequence.
When yellowfin stack up and won’t chase, chunk them up to the boat.
Fall and winter wahoo want speed. High-speed trolling covers water fast and connects with fish that ignore a slow spread. Read high-speed wahoo trolling spreads, and do not skip the wire.
Pack for This Port
Start with the blue-water trolling starter kit. Add the wahoo wire-ready kit for fall and winter trips: a wahoo will cut fluorocarbon before you see the strike. Read our wire leader roundup for what to rig.
A sea-surface temperature read is worth more than a lucky lure out here. See the offshore electronics roundup. Bring a gaff you trust from the gaffs and boatside tools lineup.
Before You Go
Check the NC Division of Marine Fisheries for state rules. Atlantic tunas, billfish, swordfish and sharks fall under federal Highly Migratory Species rules, including a vessel permit, managed by NOAA Fisheries. This is not legal advice.
A 40-mile run means an 80-mile round trip plus trolling. Fuel with a hard reserve, file a float plan, and respect the forecast. The fish don’t negotiate. Neither does the Gulf Stream when the wind blows against it.
