Yellowfin Tuna

Thunnus albacares

Range

Tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, canyon edges and offshore structure

Tackle Class

30-50lb spinning or conventional

Yellowfin reward patience and punish sloppy leader work in equal measure. A well-built chunk slick can turn an empty stretch of canyon edge into hours of steady action — but these fish get leader-shy fast under pressure, and a slick that’s producing in the morning can go dead by afternoon once the school’s seen enough hooks.

Where and When

Canyon edges, temperature breaks, and weed lines hold yellowfin consistently through the warm months. They travel in schools, often mixed with mahi and occasionally blackfin, so a slow day can turn into a multi-species blitz without warning.

Tackle Class

30-50lb class covers most yellowfin encountered chunking or trolling. Go lighter for finesse presentations in clear water, heavier if you’re marking the bigger class of fish on sonar.
