Port Aransas is where Texas goes to chase billfish. The shelf edge is in reach, and past it sits a string of deepwater platforms that hold bait, tuna and marlin like giant fish aggregating devices. Mustang Island at the back door, the whole western Gulf out front.
The Run
Clear the jetties and blue water usually shows around 25 to 30 miles out. Past roughly 40 miles, the depth runs over 1,000 feet.
The first named stop is Bakers and Hospital Rock, about a 35-mile run. Marlin Magazine says sailfish, white marlin and blue marlin are all real possibilities there in summer.
Push farther and the day-trip billfish spots stack up: the Dumps at about 66 miles, East Breaks at about 73, and Colt 45 around 77.
Then the big leagues. The deepwater platforms sit in thousands of feet of water and act like giant FADs. Tequila is about 106 miles out; the Cerveza platforms run about 121 to 132. These are long runs for well-equipped boats, and they are where the Texas billfish legend lives.
What Bites, When
Billfish season runs late spring through fall, and Marlin Magazine says summer gives the best odds on every pelagic.
Blue marlin peak July through October, per Port Aransas tourism, with fish on the board into November.
Sailfish and mahi fire July through September. Mahi start showing in spring.
Yellowfin run strongest April through July, with tuna fishing continuing into fall.
Wahoo peak April through June and stick around through summer.
Redfish never leave the bays. Bull reds hit in late summer, and fall brings the biggest fish.
TPWD’s red drum profile puts Gulf spawning from mid-August through mid-October, with big adults moving to the beaches in fall. That backs the fall redfish peak on this chart.
How to Fish It
This is trolling country. Pull a spread from the rock out to the breaks and the platforms, and watch for rips, weed and temperature edges. Our blue marlin trolling spread covers lure placement and drag for blue marlin, and the same spread raises sailfish and white marlin.
When the marlin bite stalls, crank up and make speed passes for wahoo with a high-speed wahoo spread. Live tuna fished around the platforms is a proven marlin play.
Too rough to run? The jetties and bays fish all year. Go live-bait bull reds in the fall.
Pack for This Port
A 100-mile platform trip is a test of gear and endurance. Bring a two-speed lever drag, a stand-up rod and harness, heavy braid backing, wire for wahoo, and safety gear built for the far offshore: an EPIRB is not optional on a run like this.
Start with the blue-water trolling starter kit and the wahoo wire-ready kit. Check the best offshore trolling reels and offshore PFDs and safety gear before you leave.
Before You Go
Texas manages its state waters and federal rules apply beyond them; red snapper and other reef fish seasons change every year. Check TPWD and NOAA before you go. Tunas, billfish, swordfish and sharks fall under federal Atlantic HMS rules, so read the HMS Angling permit requirements. For a platform run, file a float plan, carry fuel reserve, and pick your weather window carefully. Not legal advice. Use the agency links here.
