Palm Beach is where the Gulf Stream stops being a destination and starts being the neighborhood. The current sweeps so close to the beach that sailfish occasionally get caught off the piers. Run out the inlet, set the kites, and the fish come to you.
The Run
Barely a run at all. From Fort Pierce down to Palm Beach, the stretch known as Sailfish Alley, the Gulf Stream rides less than 10 miles offshore and corrals sailfish against the coast. Palm Beach kite crews find sails in roughly 100 to 200 feet of water. Some fish get hooked in 100 feet off the Lake Worth pier.
Summer pushes you farther. Sargassum mats bring mahi close to shore, but runs of 10 miles or more into the Atlantic are common when the fish are scattered. Captains out of Palm Beach Shores run east into the Gulf Stream to hunt temperature changes and current edges.
Want the full send? West End, Grand Bahama, sits about 56 nautical miles east of Palm Beach. That’s a Gulf Stream crossing. Treat it like one.
What Bites, When
Winter (December through March) is the main event. Sails pile in with the cold months and hang on into April, and release tournaments typically run December into April. Cold fronts trigger the big days. One January opening day of the Silver Sailfish Derby saw 659 sails released by 45 boats. Blackfin, kingfish and the occasional wahoo crash the kite spread too.
Spring into summer belongs to mahi. April and May are peak months on Florida’s east coast, and when the sargassum lines stack up in July and August the bite stays strong.
Fall is the mullet run. October is prime time inshore and nearshore, with snook and tarpon blitzing the bait schools moving down the coast.
The FWC Palm Beach County guide also lists late summer and fall for sailfish, spring into midsummer for snook, and spring through summer for tarpon. The chart keeps those broader months open as fishable; local winter sailfish reports and the October mullet run set the narrower peaks.
How to Fish It
This is kite country. Live baits fished off kites or flatlines did all the damage on the record Derby day. Kites hold the leader off the water and make the bait splash on the surface, which is exactly what a sailfish wants to see. Get the full program in our kite fishing guide for sailfish and mahi. Sailfish are the headliner.
For summer mahi, troll rigged ballyhoo along the weed, then stop and pitch jigs, plugs or chunks of sardine when you find a school. Keep a hooked fish in the water to hold the pack.
During the mullet run, snook and tarpon hammer bait along the beach and inlet structure. Topwater plugs that match a mullet earn their keep: see snook on structure and surf.
Pack for This Port
Winter runs on the sailfish and mahi kite spread kit plus the kite fishing rigs roundup. Fluorocarbon leader, circle hooks and good braid are mandatory. For summer mahi, add a few jigs and a bait cooler. Chartering? Pack the charter day kit: polarized glasses, sun hoodie and seasickness bands.
Before You Go
Florida saltwater rules come from FWC. Sailfish, tunas, swordfish and sharks are federal Atlantic Highly Migratory Species with their own vessel permit: check NOAA Fisheries. Not legal advice.
Palm Beach Inlet is a working port entrance. Wind against the Stream turns it nasty in a hurry. Read the conditions before you commit, and save the Bahamas run for a real weather window with a real fuel plan.
