Ocean City calls itself the White Marlin Capital of the World and backs it up every August. Five Mid-Atlantic canyons sit within range of the inlet. Pick the one with the best water and run it to the horizon.
The Run
The first serious stop is the Jackspot, about 30 miles out, where white marlin often show before the canyons heat up. Beyond that, the shelf edge opens up:
- Poor Man’s Canyon: about 53-54 nautical miles. The shortest canyon run.
- Baltimore Canyon: just under 60 miles. The name everyone knows.
- Washington Canyon: about 68 miles.
- Wilmington to the north and Norfolk to the south: about 75 each.
That spread matters. When the water goes green in one canyon, there is another option within the same fuel budget. Watch sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll, then commit.
Bluefin tend to stay inshore of the canyons, giving tuna options closer to port in some years. Wrecks and artificial reefs a short run off the beach cover the days when the offshore forecast says no.
What Bites, When
May and June open the tuna show. Yellowfin usually start the run at the far canyons and work north, and June into July has become the prime tuna window.
June through October is the overall offshore season for marlin, mahi and wahoo out of Ocean City.
July and August bring blue marlin to their best, and mahi build through the summer and hold into fall.
August and September are white marlin time. August carries the tournament spotlight. September keeps the bite rolling.
October closes things out with whatever the water allows before fall weather shuts the door.
How to Fish It
Billfish here are a trolling game. Build a clean spread, fish the edges and temperature breaks, and drill the hookup sequence before you need it. Our blue marlin trolling spread guide covers lure positions, speeds and teasers, and the same discipline converts white marlin bites. Target blue marlin on the deeper edges.
Yellowfin are the most commonly caught tuna in the canyons. When they mark deep and refuse the troll, shut down and chunk them up. Mahi pile under weed lines and floating debris: pitch baits as you pass.
Pack for This Port
A 60-mile canyon run is a long day. Start with the blue-water trolling starter kit. Running on a charter? The charter day kit covers the personal gear the boat won’t supply. Compare reels in the offshore trolling reels roundup and pair them with quality braid. A sea-surface temperature feed on your electronics is how you pick the right canyon.
Before You Go
Maryland requires a fishing license for the coastal bays and state Atlantic waters. Get the current rules from Maryland DNR. Tunas, billfish, swordfish and sharks are federal Highly Migratory Species with a separate vessel permit, and bluefin has its own in-season rules on the NOAA bluefin status page. Not legal advice.
Run the fuel math before you leave the dock, keep a real reserve, and respect the forecast. Sixty miles out is not the place to learn your range.
