Gloucester is a working seaport built on giant bluefin. The Gulf of Maine grounds that made this town famous sit almost inside the harbor mouth. Fish that can top a thousand pounds. Runs measured in minutes. The fish don’t negotiate.
The Run
Gloucester does not make you burn a tank to reach big fish. The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary boundary starts about 3 miles southeast of Cape Ann. Fishermen have taken giant bluefin on and around the bank for generations, and recreational fishing is allowed inside the sanctuary.
Jeffreys Ledge is about 15 miles out. It is roughly 20 miles long and 4 wide, running northeast from the shoal ground off Cape Ann, with 27 to 35 fathoms on top falling to 40 or 50 on the edges. That relief concentrates bait, and the bait brings the tuna. Tillies Bank is about 25 miles out. Charter crews commonly reach the grounds in 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and Ipswich Bay and Cape Cod Bay are part of the rotation too.
What Bites, When
May opens striped bass season, and the bass peak in June and July before tapering into fall.
June is when the bluefin program starts, and it is a good month.
July through October is the prime bluefin window. Fall bites on Jeffreys Ledge can be exceptional, with giant fish feeding hard before they leave.
November keeps a shot at bluefin alive until the weather shuts it down.
Haddock fish through the warm months, May through September, and Atlantic halibut are in play from mid-June to mid-October. Cod are on the same grounds, but Gulf of Maine cod retention has been cut to a short window, recently just weeks in the fall with a one-fish limit, and the dates shift year to year. Plan on releasing them unless the Division of Marine Fisheries regulations page says the season is open.
How to Fish It
Gloucester bluefin get fished three ways: trolling, drifting live bait, and anchoring up on the edge of structure. Sonar finds the pods; bait and discipline close the deal. When a giant eats, you need a plan. Our bump-and-wind guide covers standup gear, two-speed reels and the crew choreography that lands fish without a chair. For trolling strategy and temperature reading, see the canyon run guide. The principles carry from the edge to the ledge.
Giants on Stellwagen and Jeffreys run from mid-size school fish to true thousand-pound class. Rig for the biggest fish you might hook.
Pack for This Port
On a charter, the boat brings the heavy tackle. You bring the charter day kit: layers, foul-weather gear and seasickness backup for the Gulf of Maine chop. Running your own boat, start with a serious lever-drag from the offshore trolling reels roundup, a standup rod and harness, heavy braid, and a real gaff from the boatside tools roundup.
Before You Go
Massachusetts requires a recreational saltwater fishing permit for anglers 16 and up. Current limits are on the Division of Marine Fisheries regulations page. Bluefin are federally managed with a separate vessel permit and their own size-class and in-season rules: check the NOAA bluefin status page before every trip. Not legal advice.
Gulf of Maine water is cold all season. Dress for it, watch the forecast, and keep the fuel reserve honest.
